The factors that can hurt it most include:

Unpaid bills that have reached the warning or collection stage — even if the amount is small. A forgotten mobile phone bill can have an impact that a regularly serviced large loan does not.

Multiple accounts and open contracts without a real need, as well as frequent changes of banks within a short period.

Regular use of an overdraft (Dispo) instead of using it only as an exception.

Repeated loan applications within a short period.

Your salary amount, nationality, religion, and your own request to access your data do not affect your score. There is also an important distinction between two types of inquiries: Konditionenanfrage (request for loan terms) does not affect your score, while Kreditanfrage (actual loan application) is recorded and affects it. When comparing offers, always ask the bank to make the first type of inquiry.

How to Correct an Error in Your Record?

Errors are not uncommon, especially among newcomers due to similar names or outdated addresses. If you find an incorrect entry in your data copy, you have the right to request that it be corrected or deleted, and SCHUFA is required to investigate it. Even accurate entries do not remain forever: they are generally deleted three years after the end of the year in which the debt was settled, and in some smaller cases they may be deleted sooner after payment.

When Should You Request It? Before Looking for Housing, Not After

The correct order is: request your free data copy before you start viewing apartments. First, because the response can take weeks, and second, because if you find an error, you need time to have it corrected. Arriving at an apartment viewing appointment without the required document ready will often mean losing the apartment to a more organized applicant.

For the rest of the steps for settling in Germany — from registering your address to opening a bank account and obtaining health insurance — see the Comprehensive Germany Guide for Arabs.

This page is for general informational purposes only and does not constitute legal or financial advice.
