Belgium Reactivates Dozens of Inactive Speed Cameras in Flanders

Authorities in Belgium’s Flanders region have announced the reactivation of 94 unused speed cameras after years of inactivity. This comes with the launch of the new Flemish Traffic Fines Processing Center, aiming to enforce traffic laws more strictly and reduce speeding violations, which remain a leading cause of road accidents.

According to Het Nieuwsblad, the cameras were inactive due to federal-level restrictions on fine processing and a shortage of personnel, preventing their operation despite being installed on regional roads. With the new center now operational, these cameras are expected to be activated immediately on major roads.

The Flemish government explained that the reactivated cameras will focus on locations with frequent accidents caused by excessive speeding, aiming to enhance road safety and enforce the law more effectively.

Officials emphasized that the goal of reactivation is not merely revenue collection, but reducing accidents by ensuring drivers adhere to speed limits.

Discussions around traffic fines in Belgium have been extensive, with recent data showing an increase in speeding violations and camera-detected infractions over the past years, prompting stricter measures to improve road safety.
