Berlin Moves Toward Unprecedented Tightening of Immigration and Asylum Policies
German media have reported a clear government move to tighten immigration and asylum policies in Germany, amid rising political and security pressures linked to the increasing number of arrivals in recent times.
According to reports, German authorities have begun implementing stricter border measures, including denying entry to thousands of people who do not meet asylum or legal residency requirements, as well as accelerating deportations and the return of asylum seekers from EU countries classified as safe.
Media outlets stated that these measures are part of a new package approved by the federal government aimed at reducing irregular migration, tightening border controls, and strengthening the role of the federal police in curbing smuggling and illegal crossings.
Official estimates indicate that thousands have been prevented from entering Germany in recent months, while Berlin is reviewing several asylum-related laws, including application acceptance procedures and processing speed.
This shift reflects a notable change in Germany’s immigration policy, which in recent years had been known for its relatively open approach compared to other European countries, amid growing domestic debate over the country’s capacity to accommodate new arrivals.
Conversely, these measures have drawn criticism from human rights organizations and opposition parties, warning of their impact on asylum seekers’ rights and Germany’s humanitarian obligations, while the government argues that stricter policies have become necessary to maintain security and public order.
