Canada Adds 10 New Eligible Jobs for Student Loan Forgiveness

The Canadian government announced the expansion of the federal student loan forgiveness program by adding 10 new jobs to the list of eligible professions, aiming to ease the burden of student debt and encourage graduates to work in in-demand roles within local communities.

Federal authorities in Canada stated that the new list of eligible income will take effect from December 31, 2025, noting that the program targets workers in service, healthcare, and education roles considered essential across various provinces.

The newly eligible professions include dentist, oral health specialist, early childhood educator, licensed midwife, personal support worker, pharmacist, physiotherapist, psychologist, social worker, and teacher.

These jobs are added to a previous list that included, among others, family physicians and nurses across various specialties.

The government clarified that eligibility for forgiveness requires holding a professional license recognized in the province or territory where the beneficiary works, with some exceptions depending on the profession.

To qualify for the exemption, individuals must work a full continuous year in the profession within an eligible community, or consecutive months depending on the job type, and provide at least 400 hours of service during the eligible period, with the option to apply during or up to six months after studies.
