Germany Imposes Fines Up to €250 for Littering Cigarette Butts

Authorities in Berlin have begun enforcing stricter measures to combat the littering of cigarette butts in streets and public areas, with fines for offenders reaching up to €250.

This move is part of a broader campaign to address indiscriminate waste disposal in the city, with the regulations coming into effect in November 2025, aiming to reduce pollution and improve cleanliness across different neighborhoods.

According to Berlin authorities, violations have already been recorded in several districts, including Lichtenberg, Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, and Spandau, where monitoring of public littering is being intensified.

Penalties are not limited to cigarette butts; fines can increase significantly for illegally disposing of larger waste items, reaching up to €3,000, and in some cases, such as electronic waste disposal, up to €15,000.

Local authorities emphasized that these measures aim to deter offenders and reduce small litter in streets and parks, noting that fines collected will be used to strengthen enforcement and uphold public cleanliness laws in the city.
