Taxi fares in Turkey rise by 10% amid economic challenges

Several taxi drivers in Turkey have reached an agreement to increase trip fares by 10%, in a move aimed at easing growing operational pressures in the transportation sector.

According to local sources, the hike came after consultations between drivers’ associations and local authorities, amid rising costs of fuel, spare parts, and maintenance, which affected drivers’ profitability and made work in this sector more challenging than before.

Many drivers explained that the new fare increase is a necessary step to cope with rising prices and inflation, and to improve income levels during a time when the Turkish economy faces living cost disruptions.

Others pointed out that operational expenses, especially fuel, represent an increasing burden on their daily budgets, making the fare increase essential to ensure the continuity of work and a better standard of living.

The new increase is expected to slightly raise daily transportation costs for passengers, particularly those who regularly rely on taxis in major cities such as Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir.

Meanwhile, some passengers see the increase as justified given the current economic conditions, while others hope for a fairer pricing system that balances the interests of drivers with the needs of citizens.
