Italy Abolishes Separate Hiring for Abortion Doctors in Sicily

The Italian Constitutional Court has ruled that the Sicily region cannot reserve medical positions exclusively for doctors willing to perform abortions, stating that such employment practices violate principles of equality and non-discrimination within the healthcare sector.

The ruling followed an appeal by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government, which argued that the law passed by the region last year created special employment tracks that discriminated between medical professionals, contrary to general labor regulations in the healthcare sector.

What Alternatives Are Proposed to Ensure Continued Medical Services in Italy?

Despite abolishing the separate hiring system, the court noted that Sicilian authorities can adopt alternative measures to ensure the continued provision of abortion services, including partnering with private medical facilities to cover potential staffing shortages.

This comes amid a decline in the number of doctors willing to perform these procedures, often due to religious or ethical considerations among some medical professionals.

Abortion Remains a Controversial Issue in Italy

The court’s decision comes at a time when abortion continues to be a highly debated issue in Italy, even though it has been legal since 1978.

Some regions, particularly in the south, face difficulties in providing adequate abortion services, presenting local authorities with challenges in ensuring the continuity of healthcare services related to this matter.
