Turkey Begins Charging Road Fees for Foreign Vehicles Upon Leaving the Country
Turkey has entered a new enforcement phase regarding the passage of foreign-plated vehicles on highways, bridges, and tunnels. Starting January 1, 2026, the system for collecting unpaid tolls at border exits has been implemented.
According to the decision issued by the relevant authorities, vehicles with foreign license plates will not be allowed to leave Turkey via land borders unless all tolls for highways, bridges, and tunnels operated under the public-private partnership system have been fully paid.
The new measure aims to improve the collection of outstanding fees from this category of drivers, as foreign vehicles have previously used the road network without paying the full tolls, resulting in revenue losses.
Toll payments will be collected immediately at customs exit gates before vehicles are allowed to continue their journey out of the country.
Authorities also confirmed that this measure applies to all unpaid fees, including tolls for highways, bridges, and tunnels, and that failure to pay will prevent the vehicle from leaving the country until the outstanding amounts are settled.
