Turkey Plans to Extend Its Railways to Syria and Connect to Aleppo

The Turkish government announced a new plan to extend its railway network into Syrian territory to reach the city of Aleppo, aiming to strengthen logistical links between the two countries and support goods transportation in the region.

Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Örüloğlu, stated that the project involves extending the current railway line within Turkey to Aleppo as part of a broader plan to revive the historic Hejaz Railway, considered one of the region’s most important transportation projects.

Project Details and Proposed Rail Connections in Turkey

The minister explained that the proposed project requires funding of approximately $110 million, noting that the railway line between Aleppo and Damascus is already operational, which will facilitate connecting the Turkish network to the Syrian capital in the future.

He also revealed plans to restart the railway line between Turkey’s Nusaybin and Syria’s Qamishli, providing a direct land connection to both Syria and Iraq, as part of projects included in the Turkish government’s agenda.

Economic and Logistical Objectives of the Project in Turkey

The project primarily focuses on enhancing goods transport and logistics services rather than being merely a historical revival of the old line, as Turkey seeks to develop modern transport corridors that support regional trade and facilitate shipping between neighboring countries.

This initiative is part of broader efforts to revitalize regional transport infrastructure, enabling more efficient transport routes and strengthening economic integration among the countries involved in the project.
