Britain Tightens Immigration Policy and Imposes Visa Restrictions on Congo

The British government announced new visa restrictions for citizens of the Democratic Republic of Congo as part of its tightened immigration policy, citing London’s concerns over Kinshasa’s lack of cooperation in returning illegal and criminal migrants.

The UK Home Office stated that the decision is part of a comprehensive review of visa and asylum policies, explaining that some visa-related privileges for Congo have been temporarily suspended, with the possibility of stricter measures if non-cooperation continues.

In contrast, London confirmed that it has reached agreements with both Angola and Namibia to enhance cooperation in returning their citizens residing illegally in the UK, considering this a model of coordination it seeks with migrant-sending countries.

This move comes as the UK government intensifies efforts to curb illegal immigration, amid domestic political pressure and a recent rise in asylum applications, prompting authorities to adopt stricter measures regarding visas and deportations.

Despite the government’s assurances that the new policies aim to regulate immigration and secure the borders, these measures have drawn criticism from human rights organizations, which warn of their potential impact on asylum seekers and the UK’s humanitarian obligations.
