Canada launches a new system to compensate vaccine-affected individuals
The Canadian government has announced the launch of a new system to compensate individuals affected by vaccines, aiming to expedite the processing of backlogged claims and improve the applicant experience.
Health Minister Marjorie Mitchell stated that the Public Health Agency of Canada will manage the Vaccine Impact Assistance Program (VIAP) starting April 1, 2026, after it was previously managed externally, in a move to enhance transparency and efficiency.
The program targets individuals who have suffered serious and permanent injuries from approved vaccines in Canada since December 2020, addressing the significant backlog of claims and improving decision-making speed.
Authorities confirmed that previous applicants’ claims will automatically transfer to the new system without the need for reapplication, and the program will also provide:
- Secure online portal for applicants.
- Real-time tracking of application status.
- Easy document upload and data updates.
- Full access to case details.
Official data indicate that over 105 million vaccine doses have been administered in Canada, with about 0.056% reporting side effects and only 0.011% classified as serious cases, highlighting the rarity of complications while underscoring the importance of an effective support system for affected individuals.
