Germany Tightens Entry Rules for Travelers from Spain

German authorities have announced changes to the country’s entry regulations, allowing security officials to deny entry to travelers from Spain who do not carry valid physical travel documents.

This decision comes as part of stricter border control measures under the government of Friedrich Merz, with digital IDs or photos of documents on mobile phones no longer accepted for entry, according to the German Foreign Ministry.

Experts indicate that this step aims to enhance security at border checkpoints and ensure travelers comply with official documentation requirements, particularly amid the rising number of tourists and newcomers seeking work or short-term stays in Germany.

Authorities have urged all travelers to ensure their physical documents are valid before traveling to avoid denied entry or delays, emphasizing that relying solely on digital copies will not be sufficient at checkpoints.
