Heavy Snow and Harsh Winter Conditions in Germany Raise Road Slipperiness Warnings
The German Weather Service has warned drivers of increased road hazards as snow continues to fall and ice forms, coinciding with heavy travel as families return from their winter holidays.
The German Weather Service indicated that temperatures will range between +3°C and –3°C, increasing the risk of slippery roads, and urged drivers to reduce speed and adopt cautious driving practices.
Meteorology expert Jacqueline Kern emphasized that the current weather conditions demand the utmost caution, particularly amid heavy traffic.
Further snowfall is expected throughout the day, especially in areas stretching from the northwest of the country to the Ore Mountains, coinciding with the reopening of schools in several states starting Monday.
In North Rhine-Westphalia, the wintry weather has disrupted air travel, causing delays at Düsseldorf Airport and affecting flights in Dortmund, while regional train services operated by Deutsche Bahn have also experienced significant restrictions and delays.
Northern Germany experienced a rise in accidents last Saturday due to slippery roads, with additional reports coming from Rhineland-Palatinate, North Rhine-Westphalia, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Baden-Württemberg, and Bavaria.
Weather experts predict that temperatures will drop to below freezing this Monday, ranging from –10°C to –15°C in the south and –3°C to –9°C across the rest of the country, with continued chances of snow showers, particularly in the northern regions.
