UK Considers Social Media Ban for Minors

Amid rising warnings from medical experts, the UK government is preparing to discuss imposing strict restrictions on social media use for children under 16, potentially including a partial or full ban for this age group to protect their physical and mental health.

Senior doctors have warned that excessive screen time on smartphones poses a public health emergency for children, affecting vision, behavior, concentration, and exposing them to potentially harmful content.

A report from the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges confirmed that it contacted ministers after a meeting of over 20 doctors who presented cases of children suffering health and behavioral issues due to excessive device use.

Academy head Dr. Janet Dixon noted that children live in a digital bubble, constantly connected to smart devices, impacting their lifestyle and overall health.

Dr. Zara Haider from the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Health warned of dangerous online trends among teens, such as imitating risky challenges that could result in serious injuries or death.

A psychologist added that half of adolescents aged 13–14 have viewed violent content on their phones, highlighting weak parental control and easy access to inappropriate material.

In response, the UK government is preparing legislative consultations, including potential amendments in Parliament. The House of Lords is expected to discuss a bill aimed at enhancing child welfare in schools and society, with challenges anticipated in the House of Commons.
