Germany Aims to Repatriate 80% of Syrian Refugees Within 3 Years

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that Germany hopes to return about 80% of Syrian refugees residing in the country to Syria over the next three years, in coordination with Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharrah.

The statement followed a meeting in Berlin, where Merz noted that the situation in Syria has changed significantly since the end of the war, necessitating a reassessment of protection needs for refugees.

The first phase will target those whose residence rights are no longer valid, especially convicted criminals, with plans to expand returns to other groups later.

At the same time, some Syrians, particularly doctors and healthcare providers, may be allowed to remain due to their importance in the labor market.

President Ahmad Al-Sharrah stated that Syria is working with the German government to develop a “circular” migration model, enabling Syrians to contribute to rebuilding Syria without losing the stability they have built in Germany for those who wish to stay.

Opposition Green Party figures warned that returning to Syria remains difficult for many refugees due to fragile security and weak infrastructure, especially since many have settled in Germany and work in essential jobs.

This move comes amid rising debate on migration in Germany and Europe, particularly with growing support for anti-immigration parties since the 2015 refugee crisis.
