Berlin is testing cars equipped with cameras to monitor parking violations.

The German capital is preparing to trial a new system using vehicles fitted with cameras and digital scanning to detect and process illegal parking on streets, as part of efforts to improve traffic violation monitoring efficiency.

The system involves cars patrolling city neighborhoods with specialized cameras capable of recording violations when vehicles are parked in unauthorized areas, then sending the data directly to the authorities to complete the fine issuance process.

This method serves as an alternative to traditional approaches where traffic inspectors manually check a limited number of cars daily, which slows enforcement and misses repeated violations.

Officials hope the new system will increase the speed and efficiency of street monitoring and reduce congestion caused by no-parking zones.

Since last spring, the state of Baden-Württemberg has been testing a similar system with camera-equipped cars, providing a trial framework that can be leveraged before broader deployment in Berlin.

This development is part of efforts by some German cities to enhance traffic violation monitoring using advanced technology, amid public discussions on its effectiveness, impact on privacy, and law enforcement efficiency in urban areas.
