Italy Reports First Human Case of H9N2 Avian Influenza in Europe

Italy’s Ministry of Health has confirmed the first human case of H9N2 avian influenza in Europe, after the virus was detected in a child within the country, an incident that has drawn the attention of European health authorities.

The Ministry of Health explained that the case involved a child who had direct contact with infected birds on a family farm, suggesting that the infection likely resulted from direct handling of poultry.

Authorities noted that the child showed mild symptoms and received medical follow-up without any serious complications, confirming that the patient’s health condition is stable.

The Ministry of Health emphasized that epidemiological investigations are ongoing to identify all contacts of the case and ensure that no further transmission of the virus has occurred.

Following the case, health authorities began implementing preventive measures and strict health monitoring, particularly in the areas where the infection was detected, aiming to limit any potential spread of the virus.

Officials confirmed that no human-to-human transmission has been reported so far, indicating that the risk of transmission among humans remains low based on current data.

This case comes as European health authorities continue to monitor the spread of various avian influenza strains. The H9N2 virus is among the strains previously detected in several regions worldwide and is often associated with infection following direct contact with birds.

Health authorities affirmed that they continue to coordinate with European and international health agencies to monitor the situation and exchange information as part of efforts to prevent the virus from spreading across the continent.
