Belgium Delays Biometric Data Registration System for Travelers

Belgian authorities have announced a postponement in implementing the biometric data registration system for travelers from outside the European Union under the European Entry/Exit System (EES), due to severe congestion observed during initial airport tests.

The system was initially scheduled for a phased rollout at Brussels Airport, ahead of full implementation by April 10. However, authorities have temporarily delayed the launch, following the example of other European countries such as France and the Netherlands.

The delay falls within the flexibility allowed by the European system for member states to make adjustments in response to technical or operational issues, or in cases of excessive congestion, without compromising the quality of current border controls.

Belgian Interior Minister Bernard Quintin assured that the postponement will not affect traveler safety and security, as all arrivals will still undergo strict screening.

Meanwhile, Belgian Minister of Asylum and Migration Annelien Van Bossuyt noted that the new European system requires additional time to operate smoothly in practice before full implementation across all entry points.

The Entry/Exit System, gradually introduced by the EU since October, aims to strengthen border monitoring and improve immigration management by requiring travelers to provide fingerprints, a facial image, passport details, and departure information.
