New Decision in Turkey to Verify Social Media Users’ Identities

Authorities in Turkey are moving to implement new rules requiring social media users to verify their real identities within a specified timeframe, aiming to enhance transparency and reduce fake accounts and abusive content online.

Officials announced that users will be required to confirm their identities using a personal ID card during a transitional period of up to three months, after which actions will be taken against accounts that do not meet the new requirements.

Transitional Period Before Deleting Unverified Accounts in Turkey

According to Turkish Minister of Justice Akın Gürlük, the new decision gives users a set period to update their information or delete accounts they do not wish to keep, before platforms take automatic action against unverified accounts.

The minister explained that the goal of this step is to hold users accountable for what they post online, noting that any abuse or defamation on social media should have clear consequences, especially given the prevalence of anonymous accounts.

Reducing Fake Accounts and Bots in Turkey

Through these measures, the Turkish government aims to address the phenomenon of fake accounts and bots used to spread misinformation or conduct online defamation campaigns.

Authorities confirmed that identity verification will help reduce the spread of fake accounts, enhance digital responsibility among users, and limit the misuse of social media platforms.
