Official Warning Issued Over Respiratory Virus in the UK
The UK Health Security Agency has issued an urgent health warning about the spread of adenovirus, a common respiratory virus, amid rising infection rates, particularly among children and the elderly.
The Health Security Agency explained that the virus, which has symptoms similar to flu and cold, can cause infections in the airways, stomach, eyes, and ears, and in some cases may lead to complications requiring medical care or hospitalization, especially in high-risk groups.
The virus spreads easily through coughing, sneezing, or touching contaminated surfaces and then touching the face. Symptoms usually appear within two days to two weeks after exposure and include fever, sore throat, cough, difficulty breathing, runny nose, and in some cases, gastrointestinal symptoms.
Health authorities warned that continued spread during the winter season could put additional pressure on the healthcare system, urging the public to follow personal hygiene measures such as regular handwashing, covering the mouth when coughing, and staying home when experiencing symptoms to prevent transmission to vulnerable populations.
The UK Health Security Agency also emphasized the importance of consulting a doctor immediately if symptoms worsen or breathing becomes difficult, particularly for infants, the elderly, and patients with chronic illnesses, to reduce the risk of potential health complications.
