Spain Approves Free Healthcare for Undocumented Migrants

The government in Spain has issued a new decision that reinstates access to the public healthcare system to include all residents in the country, including migrants who do not have official residence documents.

The decision came after the Cabinet approved a new decree aimed at ensuring everyone can access the national health system services without discrimination based on legal status.

Under this measure, undocumented migrants will be able to receive treatment in public hospitals and health centers for free, just like other residents.

The decision aims to eliminate administrative barriers that previously prevented thousands of people from obtaining medical care, as some previous procedures required residence documents or bureaucratic conditions that hindered many from benefiting from health services.

According to the Spanish government, the new reform reinstates the principle of health for all within the national health system and ensures that the most vulnerable groups, such as children, pregnant women, and asylum seekers, can receive the necessary treatment without obstacles.

The decision also allows the acceptance of alternative documents to prove residence within the country, such as utility bills, school documents, or social reports, to facilitate registering beneficiaries in the health system.

This measure comes as part of a broader move by the Spanish government to strengthen social policies and integrate migrants into society, at a time when other European countries are moving toward stricter immigration measures.
