Important Change to Belgium’s 112 Emergency Number to Improve Response Speed
Belgium’s Federal Ministry of the Interior has announced a new modification to the way emergency calls are handled via the 112 number, effective from next Monday. The change aims to enhance response times and improve the quality of service provided to citizens during crises.
A ministry spokesperson explained that the measure addresses language challenges faced by some callers, particularly in areas near the linguistic borders between French-, Dutch-, and German-speaking communities.
Under the new system, callers will be directed to the appropriate response center based on their language selection before the call is transferred to emergency services, helping to reduce delays or miscommunication.
According to official details, multiple language options (French – Dutch – German) will be offered when dialing the 112 number in Namur and Limburg during the initial pilot phase, with plans to expand the system to other regions later.
Officials clarified that this update does not affect calls to the police via number 101, but it will improve coordination between different call centers and emergency services, especially in situations requiring rapid responses, such as fires, accidents, or medical emergencies.
