Australian State Moves to Make Remote Work a Legal Right for Employees

Victoria, Australia, is preparing to introduce new legislation that could grant employees a legal right to work from home two days a week, aiming to improve work-life balance and enhance working conditions.

According to the state government, the proposed law will allow any employee capable of performing their duties remotely to exercise this right, regardless of the size of the company or employer.

The bill is expected to be presented to the state parliament in July, with official implementation scheduled for September 1, pending the necessary approval.

Victoria’s Premier, Jacinta Allan, stated that working from home offers multiple benefits for families and employees, helping save time and money while giving workers greater flexibility in organizing their daily lives.

The law will also include a mechanism to resolve potential disputes between employees and employers regarding the exercise of this right, while small businesses with fewer than 15 employees will be granted an extended deadline until July 2027 to comply with the new rules.

Observers believe this move could represent a significant shift in workplace policies in Australia, especially with the growing reliance on remote work following the COVID-19 pandemic and the demonstrated ability to maintain productivity while offering employees greater flexibility.
