European Blue Card in Germany 2026: Salary Thresholds and Professions

The Two Salary Thresholds in 2026

European Blue Card in Germany
StatusMinimum Gross Annual SalaryNote
Regular occupations50,700 €Approximately €4,225 per month before taxes
Shortage occupations (Engpassberufe)€45,934.20Approximately €3,828 per month — with approval from the Federal Employment Agency
Recent graduate whose degree is less than 3 years old€45,934.20Even outside the shortage occupation list — a temporary advantage that ends once 3 years have passed since graduation

🔴 The last row is what most candidates overlook: anyone who graduated less than three years ago qualifies for the lower threshold regardless of their field of specialization. Applying early after graduation can therefore save you around five thousand euros in the salary requirement.

Which Shortage Occupations Are Covered?

  • Fields of science, mathematics, engineering, and information technology in their various specializations
  • Doctors in various specialties
  • Production, logistics, and manufacturing managers
  • Information and communications technology services managers
  • Nursing and midwifery with an academic qualification, as well as other academic healthcare professions
  • Teachers at various educational levels

Non-Salary Requirements

The financial threshold is only one requirement. The following are also required:

  • A university degree recognized in Germany or equivalent — check it in the anabin database before taking any other step, as this is the obstacle that causes most applications to fail.
  • An employment contract or binding job offer in Germany for at least six months, and the position must match your qualifications.
  • For regulated professions (such as medicine, nursing, and teaching), a professional license is also required. This is a separate process from the visa and may take several months.

What Makes It Better Than a Regular Work Permit?

FeatureDetails
Permanent ResidenceAfter 27 months of employment, reduced to 21 months with proof of German language skills at B1 level.
Family ReunificationThe spouse can join without being required to prove German language skills and is entitled to work immediately without restrictions.
Mobility Within EuropeThe possibility of moving to another European country under easier conditions after a period of residence.
Absence from GermanyGreater flexibility to stay outside the country without losing the residence permit compared with regular permits.

The most important practical difference is the family reunification provision: under other pathways, the spouse may be required to prove A1-level German before traveling, which can delay families for months. The EU Blue Card eliminates this requirement.

Three Tips to Speed Up Your Application

  • Start by getting your degree recognized, not by looking for a job. A job offer with an unrecognized degree is of no value.
  • Ask the employer to explicitly state the gross annual salary in the contract, not just the monthly salary, so that it directly matches the wording of the requirement.
  • Calculate the basic salary alone. Variable bonuses and non-guaranteed incentives may not be counted toward the threshold.
